"The Ambassadors Discussions"
Informal discussion sessions
on current international affairs with the
Austrian Ambassador Dr. Alexander Christiani.
No.1 - 23.03.03 "Austria - Player or Bystander"
No.2 - 19.11.03 Infomal Discussion Evening on Current Affairs
Wednesday, 19. November 2003
As already in the 2002/03 academic session, we were delighted to have been invited again to the Ambassadors Residence for another informal discussion evening where everyone can feel free to join in for an active and critical debate. Besides the EU enlargements and its political and societal inplications for Austria and the Europan Union, The EU-US relationship was addressed. Steel Tarrifs and George W.Bushs visitto London in that week, as well as GM food and various other issues came up. After a great buffet of a variety of sandwiches, Austrian, beer, wine and more, the informal discussions were continued to inform us about a diplomatic career and its challenges. Dr.Chistiani's narrations of his experiences in South Africa during the Apartheid Regime and a Press Conference with Nelson Mandela shortly after its end were fascinating. This and other examples of situations were diplomacy is crucial (such as his time in the Netherlands during the EU Sanctions in early 2000) gave us an inside view into what a diplomatic career could look like. Judging from my own experience and the general feedback on the event, I can say it was a great evening with a lively and infomal debate on issues we all are concerned with. (Hannes Reinisch)
